Air Tightness Tester: Understanding Leak Rate Units PLUS Automation

Publish Date:22-06-2024

Leak rate is used to measure the speed at which leakage occurs, usually expressed as the amount of fluid passing through a specific cross-section per unit of time. The unit of leak rate depends on whether volumetric flow or mass flow is being measured, as well as the measurement system used (International System of Units, SI, or US customary units).

The following are some common leak rate units:

1. International System of Units (SI):

Cubic meters per second (m³/s): used for larger leak flow rates.

Liters per second (L/s) or liters per minute (L/min): commonly used for medium flow rate measurement.

Microliters per second (μL/s): used for very small leak flow rates.

2. U.S. Engineering Unit System:

Cubic feet per hour (ft³/h): used for larger leak flow rates.

Gallons per hour (gal/h): commonly used for measuring medium flow rates.

3. Mass flow rate:

Kilograms per second (kg/s): a mass-based leak rate unit.

Grams per second (g/s): used for smaller mass flow rates.

4. Special units in industrial applications:

Standard cubic feet per hour (scfh): cubic feet flow rate under standard conditions (usually 0°C or 60°F and 1 atmosphere).

Million standard cubic feet per hour (MMscfh): commonly used to describe very large gas flows, such as the output of natural gas wells.

5. Other units:

psi·min/100 ft³: In certain specific industrial applications, leak rates may be expressed as a combination of pressure drop and volume.

Leak rateThe choice of measurement and units depends on the specific application scenario and the required precision. When performing leak testing, selecting the appropriate units is crucial to ensuring the accuracy and comparability of measurement results.
